B&H and using PayPal to pay
Jun 29, 2018
When using PayPal to purchase from B&H they always take the money first before the item(s) ship. Not a big deal but if the item is back ordered then it is taken weeks or even months before shipping the item(s).
I just purchased an item from Home Depot using PayPal and they don't collect their money until the item ships.
So why is that?
Disclaimer - I've never had a problem with B&H. They have always been great but I'm just wondering why they have to collect up front vs on the back end of the transaction? Previous to this, I always thought it was a PayPal thing.

Why not give all of the information? PayPal is not a bank, of course. So, were you using a bank account (savings, checking, debit card, etc.) or credit card?

I don't think that makes any difference but if it does, it gets charged against my credit card. That being said, both charges were against the same credit card.
B&H tells you when using PayPal that it charges on the front end of the transaction. I don't think they know what it's it's being charged against.

No, B&H wouldn't know anything other than "PayPal".
And you're correct, it doesn't matter what form of payment is being used. The retailer either charges PayPal or they don't. Not sure why that guy even asked that.
Stores just have different policies. Amazon often waits until the item is shipped. Even then it might depend on whether they are selling it or a marketplace seller. I think in the regular retail world it's more common to charge first.

I do not now recall when or why we set the payment parameters for Paypal. I do know for US customers who pay with a credit card we charge when we ship. For other payment methods and for all non-USA customers, we charge when we receive the order.
We tried the charge-on-ship process for non-USA credit cards and learned that too often a non-USA bank saw our lien as a charge and the subsequent charge as a charge. It was a problem, as you might imagine.

Thanks for a reply to the thread Henry.
Maybe I do need to supply more info. Yes, I am in Canada. So from your reply, does that mean that non-USA customers using PayPal get charged up front and US customers get charged when shipped?
I've used PayPal for many online transactions and I've always been charged up front. I thought that was just the way of PayPal. It wasn't until the Home Depot purchase, I realized it wasn't a PayPal policy.

No. All Paypal customers get charged when the order is submitted.
